Dr. David E. Kaufman: A History Of New York City Synagogues
From Mill Street To Fifth Avenue
Mondays 6:30 – 8:00 PM
November 4, 18, 25, December 2, 9, 16
Synagogues reflect the Jewish history of this great city and the evolution of American Judaism, from its first stirrings in colonial times, its flowering in the late 19th century and, with massive Eastern European immigration, to its contemporary face.
Using a multimedia approach including slides, walking tours, readings and classroom learning, we will explore the extraordinary legacy of synagogue building both in the historical context and by examining the art and architecture of these special buildings.
