The Ten Commandments, the Decalogue, or the “Ten Sayings” are widely viewed among Jews
and Christians as the iconic symbol of God’s relationship with humanity, the concrete emblem of Israel’s covenant with God and a universal creed of ethics and morality. Still, many questions and ambiguities surround the text. What are its origins? Why are there multiple versions? What exactly are the “ten”? What do their structure and arrangement suggest? Do certain inherent values—such as the treatment of women—remain defensible today? How did the Ten Commandments come to be visualized as a double tablet? We’ll explore these and other questions to illuminate the significance of this biblical cornerstone.
