Since its birth, the State of Israel has encountered hostility from its neighbors. Despite landmark peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, multiple threats persist. The resulting debates among Israeli politicians, security experts and academics over how to respond will inform much of our class discussion as we focus on key regional players: Egypt (cold peace); Jordan (uneasy partnership); Lebanon (harboring Hezbollah); Syria (mired in civil war) and Iran (regional power). You’ll be encouraged to share your own views on what strategies Israel should pursue to boost longterm viability.
