The 19th-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most controversial thinkers of the modern era, especially where religion in general and Judaism in particular are concerned. As Hitler's favorite philosopher, he might seem an unfit subject for study in a Jewish context. But in this course, you will discover how the Nazis misappropriated Nietzsche's philosophy and how his potent critique of religion can be and has been put to positive use in the formation of a modernist interpretation of Judaism that one could almost call Nietzschean.
