The creation of the State of Israel not only transformed how Jews across the world saw themselves; it provoked a crucial new question: Would Israel be a state like any other or become a laboratory for Jewish renewal for both its citizens and Diaspora Jews? This class will explore how American and Israeli Jews have understood the cultural, spiritual, religious and political dimensions of Zionism and Israel over the past 150 years.
Readings will include writings from Theodore Herzl, Ahad Ha’am, A. D. Gordon, Abraham Isaac Kook and contemporary thinkers Hillel Halkin and Micah Goodman.
