(Spring Session)
Barbara C. Freedman Artists’ Beit Midrash
Tobi Kahn & Rabba Wendy Amsellem
This class, co-led by an artist and a rabbi, is a community of artists who analyze, interrogate and create. In the first hour, we will examine the relevant text to see how, as artists, we can interpret the narratives visually. In the second, we will critique the art created by the participants.
Mondays, April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, June 1
7:00 – 9:00 PM
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
We will study Talmudic narratives that posit environments that limit freedom of expression against ones with open discourse. Examples will include Rabban Gamliel's stifling Beit Midrash vs. Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah's freer hand, and Rabbi Eliezer's scaring his students into silence vs. Rabbi Yehoshua's encouraging them to speak.
This class is sponsored by Nancy, David and Jonathan Goldhill, in memory of their mother Barbara C. Freedman
