ABOUT ABOUT

Artists’ Beit Midrash: The Sacred Imagination

with Tobi Kahn and Rabbi Dianne Cohler-Esses

Mondays 7:00 – 9:00 PM

November 4, 18, 25, December 2, 9, 16

Seeing is at the heart of Torah, belying a reductive interpretation of the Second Commandment. Color, space, design, beauty and terror all are present directly and enduringly.

In the first hour, we will examine and discuss a diverse range of Jewish texts, both biblical and rabbinic, to see how, as artists, we can interpret these narratives visually. In the second, we will critique the art created by the participants. The Skirball Academy Artists' Beit Midrash, co-led by an artist and a rabbi, is a community of artists who analyze, interrogate and create.
