The American Jewish Experience
In the words of historian Jonathan Sarna: "American Jewish history weds together two great historical traditions: one Jewish, the other American, [but] nevertheless forms a distinctive historical tradition of its own, now more than three centuries old. It is perpetuated generation after generation by creative men and women, who grapple with the tensions and paradoxes inherent in American Jewish life, and fashion from them what we know as the American Jewish experience.”
In this six-session survey, we will explore this experience, highlighting key themes of American Jewish exceptionalism, social integration, antisemitism, religious life, cultural contributions and Jewish survival in the American melting pot.
