Dr. A. J. Berkovitz: The Mysteries of The Dead Sea Scrolls
Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:00 PM
November 5, 12, 19, December 3, 10, 17
The Dead Sea Scrolls captured both scholarly and popular attention after their discovery in the middle of the 20th century. What are they? Who wrote them? Why do they matter? In answering these questions, we will explore a forgotten chapter in the history of Judaism — the rich but contentious period of the Second Temple.
By closely reading the Scrolls, we will peer into a world of internecine conflict, the creation of the Jewish biblical canon, the beginnings of biblical interpretation, the rise of messianism and the origins of rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity.
