The question of how a just God could allow, if not cause, so much evil in the world was posed way back in the Book of Job. Events of the 20th century, in particular the Holocaust, gave the question renewed impetus.
Through an examination of the work of thinkers including Richard Rubenstein, Emil Fackenheim, Eliezer Berkovits and Joseph Soloveitchik, we will ask: Was the Holocaust a unique evil that called for a unique response? Do the old answers still work? Should we be looking for answers at all?
