ABOUT ABOUT

Dr. Mark W. Weisstuch: The Merchant of Venice

An Indictment of Intolerance

Wednesday 6:30 – 8:00 PM

November 6, 13, 20, December 4, 11, 18

Is an honest production of The Merchant of Venice still possible given how rife Shakespeare’s comedy is with dark currents of religious, racial and ethnic intolerance?

We will examine different performance interpretations and study the themes of this enigmatic play — the countervailing values of justice and mercy; the plight of those coping with social prejudice; the opposition of Christian “love” and Jewish “law” — to explore how The Merchant of Venice serves as a prism refracting the attitudes of Christians towards Jews and Jews towards Christians.
