Poland, The Holocaust and Cinema
Even before the conclusion of World War II, Polish filmmakers were making movies about the Shoah and throughout the post- World War II period, some Poland’s finest filmmakers continued addressing questions about the Nazi’s mass extermination of Polish Jews.
More recently, that focus has moved to how Poles themselves treated their Jewish neighbors during the war, provoking heated reactions and even new laws limiting discussion of Polish culpability in the Holocaust.
We will explore a variety of these films, including Korczak (1990), In Darkness (2011), Aftermath (2012), Ida (2013), and the soon-to-be released The Wedding Day.
Portions of the films will be shown during the course with pauses for discussion.
