The Jewish Philip Roth through Cinema

Few American writers have been so celebrated for their fiction as Philip Roth, winner of the National Book Award, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a National Humanities Medal and the Man Booker International Prize. Fewer still have woven their own Jewish backgrounds so vividly into their fiction — or the films adapted from it.

In this course examining the films based on Roth’s work, we will focus on the largely autobiographical nature of Roth’s writing and how it reflects the American Jewish experience of a young man who grew up in post-Depression New Jersey.

Portions of the films American Pastoral, The Human Stain, Indignation, The Plot Against America and Portnoy's Complaint will be shown during the course with pauses for discussion.
