Sigmund Freud’s Moses
In his final work, Moses and Monotheism, Sigmund Freud proposes an alternate history of Moses: No, he wasn’t a Hebrew but an Egyptian nobleman who led his close followers into freedom. After rebelling and murdering him, they passed down their guilt at their dastardly deed, which their descendants, the Jews, coped with through neurotic expressions of religious sentiment.
Freud’s work began as a historical novel based on his lifelong interest in archaeology, particularly Egyptology, and morphed first into an analysis of new important archaeological discoveries. As we textually analyze Moses and Monotheism, we will trace that evolution into a psychoanalytic exposé of the biblical Moses employing many of Freud’s groundbreaking theories.
