Introduction to Hebrew Calligraphy
Sofrim — Jewish ritual scribes, are the men and women who painstakingly draw each letter of the Torah and prepare the parchments inserted in tefillin or mezuzot. They belong to one of the most honored professions in Jewish tradition. How are they trained? What materials do they use in their ritual calligraphy? How do they form each letter? And how do they correct their mistakes?
In this hands-on course, students will learn how to form letters and words according to the Ashkenazi Beit Yosef tradition and explore texts and practical considerations of encountering Safrut (the ritual writing penned by a Sofer) in personal and congregational life.
