One of the most prominent intellectuals of the 20th century, Isaiah Berlin brought such unique brilliance and wit to his writings about freedom, the importance of history and the liberating, anti-orthodox nature of philosophy that world leaders sought his counsel and Oxford University students cherished him as a beloved don for more than 50 years. A refugee to England from Russia during the upheaval of the Revolution, he brought a unique perspective to the Cold War in his writings on political theory, intellectual history, Russian literature and beyond.

This course will explore some of Berlin’s most famous essays in his anthology, The Proper Study of Mankind, highlighting his timely, lucid thoughts on individual rights, liberty, tolerance and the role and power of ideas.

The Skirball Academy is currently offering classes virtually (over Zoom) for Spring 2021.
