Folktales told from generation to generation paint a rich portrait of the Jewish People: Absent a place to call home for much of our history, our landscape became the human heart—where a particular humor, healing, hope and wisdom reside. In this course, we’ll examine the many-splendored genres of the Jewish oral tradition, as well as what constitutes a specifically Jewish tale. As we explore how these stories become our legacies, we’ll hear a wide variety of tales from Biblical, Talmudic, Midrashic, Hasidic, Ashkenazi and Sephardi sources that incorporate humor, healing, hope and wisdom.
