Rabbi Joseph Skloot: Jewish-Christian Relations in the Modern World, Part I
Wednesday 6:30 – 8:00 PM
November 13, 20, December 4, 11, 18 and TBD
After the Middle Ages, as Jews encountered new political, legal, social and cultural frameworks, European Jewish communities and Judaism itself went through major transformations. We will explore how Jews sought both to acculturate by adopting the ideas and practices of the majority and to differentiate themselves. Special emphasis will be placed on the involvement of Jews in the Enlightenment and Romantic movements, as well as the emergence of anti-Semitism, Zionism and modern Jewish politics.
