With Zionism now a dirty word in some circles, it seems particularly timely to ask what Zionism actually means and to explore the differing approaches taken to it both historically and in contemporary Jewish thought. How have Jewish thinkers, both religious and secular, tried to place the State of Israel within Jewish and more general political thought? Is it possible to reconcile the Jewish nature of the state with contemporary democratic values?
