The relationship between Israel and Egypt predates the book of Exodus, starting with the very origins of the biblical Hebrews. Abraham, traditionally seen as the father of the Jewish people, flees to Egypt during a famine in Canaan, marking the beginning of an ambivalent, often tempestuous, relationship between the Hebrews and the Land of Egypt. We will study the literary and theological functions of the stories of Israel and Egypt in the book of Genesis, considering archaeological and literary evidence for the relationship between Israel and Egypt from Abraham and Sarah to the death of Joseph.
