(This course skips Nov. 22nd)
Offered In-Person
As you sit in the magnificent Temple Emanu-El Main Sanctuary admiring the stained-glass windows, have you ever wondered what that unicorn was doing hovering above you?
And when you walk into Greenwald Hall for services or lectures, have you asked yourself about the family for which it was named?
What are the stories and secrets of Temple Emanu-El? For example, what happened to Mrs. Astor’s wine cellar when her mansion was torn down so the temple could be built?
Mark Heutlinger and Warren Klein are two people who can answer those and an endless stream of other questions, and they will do just that on a behind-the-scenes tour of Emanu-El, exploring the building’s architecture, the congregation’s history, our museum collection, former clergy and some of our most prominent — and notorious — members. Mark will share stories from his 34 years at Emanu-El while Warren will bring in historical documents and materials from our congregational archives. Each week will be devoted to a different aspect of our 178 years of history as one of the leading Reform congregations — and one of the most magnificent Jewish houses of worship — in the world.
