Transitions of Power

In the early third century, Rabbi Yehuda haNasi, the political and spiritual leader of the Jewish community, made a careful plan for political succession that ran into an array of obstacles — jealous children, unusually modest rabbis, nosy neighbors and an extremely proactive maid. As we live through a fraught transition of presidential power here in the United States, we will explore Rabbi Yehuda haNasi's story in both the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds.
